Sister Katharine Glencross

As a child, hearing about the missionary work of the Ursuline Nuns, in the Caribbean, I wanted to go abroad and work with the children there. The Orphanage in Guyana attracted me, especially as in school we collected useful items to send to them.

My hopes were fulfilled many years later, when my request was granted and I went first to Barbados and later to Venezuela visiting both Guyana and Jamaica during my 17 years in the Province. My first two  years were spent teaching in St Patrick’s Mission school in Barbados. I began by volunteering, doing different things such as teaching the secondary pupils to read and assisting teachers. In Venezuela I taught primary students English as a foreign language and when I returned to Barbados after six years I had my own primary class. On Saturdays I worked as a catechist in the parish, preparing for confirmation.

Looking back on those years, I am very grateful for all the opportunities that came my way both with the people I met as well as the beauties of creation.
