St Angela’s Ursuline School Tigray, Ethiopia

For two decades our English province and schools have supported the Ursulines in Ethiopia, and our contributions have made a great difference to their outlook and achievements. Sisters Una and Elizabeth originally went there to teach English to their novices, which they did for 15 years. These sisters regularly ran Language Summer schools in Ursuline provinces but had never before worked in such challenging conditions and such poverty. The Ethiopian Ursulines were founded to work for the betterment of those among whom they lived especially women, and this has remained their hallmark.

In recent years Tigray has suffered civil war, Covid and a severe locusts plague resulting in 90% of schools being closed and damaged. Today, only 6% of pupils are currently in school. Our Ursuline School, St Angela's was severely damaged, but despite this, the Sisters have opened their school with a role that has increased from 1500 pupils to 2400. Many pupils feel discouraged from attending school, as many have suffered trauma and are in need of long term psychological healing.

The English Province is committed to fundraise on behalf of our Sisters in Ethiopia, focusing on the great need for water and sanitation. Tigray is geographically an area of draught. Water is becoming more scarce each year and the town water facilities have sustained substantial destruction. The school sanitation is in a critical condition and all money raised will be directed to this cause.

Any donations we receive will make a huge difference to the lives of young people in Tigray and we are grateful for any support you can give.
